Academics Chair The academic chair is responsible for acting as a liaison between students and faculty. Students should address any concerns to the academic chair, either through their class rep or directly.
Class Representatives Class
Representatives are not necessarily members of the COMPSA executive.
However, they play an important role as the academic chairs’ contacts with
each computing course. Class representatives should bring any
course-related concerns (e.g. scheduling, curriculum, evaluation, etc.) to
the attention of the academic chair, who will then address the problem with
the instructor concerned. Class representatives are also responsible for
administering QUEST forms at the conclusion of the course.
Howard Staveley Howard Staveley was a long-time adjunct instructor in computing at Queen's University. He consistently earned outstanding evaluations from his classes, and established a standard for teaching excellence. Students loved Howard because he was a great instructor who loved teaching. He was not a teacher by profession - he took on the role over and above his full time job with Queen's Computing and Communication Services (now called Information Technology Services). Howard brought to his classes his own enthusiasm, his respect for the students, and his appreciation for the humanity in the science.
Howard passed away in 1996, in the midst of a successful career. He has been sorely missed by his many friends at Queen's. For the 1997-98 year, an annual award was created in his memory. Each year the undergraduate students in the School of Computing choose an instructor to receive the Howard Staveley Teaching Award.
Nominations for the award are accepted year-round, via e-mail. From those nominations, the COMPSA executive selects the winners and runners-up; the awards are presented at the end-of-year social. |
