October started with the CSearch Conference which was hosted by the School of Computing’s graduate students and CS-Can | Info-Can. The conference was held virtually with over 300 guests.
A number of presenters and guests came from different universities but the substantial representation and participation from the Queen’s School of Computing did not go unnoticed.
On Saturday October 3rd, School of Computing student Brian Chen gave a presentation titled “Identifying and Annotating Atrial Fibrillation at Scale.”
The student poster session was made possible thanks to the creative planning of the Executive Committee and an online interaction communication tool called Gather. Guests could view the posters and interact with the presenters in three separate poster rooms while possibly walking into walls or plants by accident without any social awkwardness.
Queen’s School of Computing student Catherine Wu presented her poster titled “Development of an open source system for prostate biopsy training in Senegal.”
Sunday morning started off with an intriguing Keynote Presentation “Bio-Inspired Intelligent Computing” by Dr. Ting Hu. Kudos to the Executive Committee for planning a successful event! Here’s what the members of the committee had to say about planning a virtual conference.
“Transitioning to online was definitely a challenge for our team. It completely changed the way we ran CSearch, and I’m very proud that we managed to grow the conference this year despite that challenge.” – Alexander Salgo, Conference Chair
“I thought that planning the first-ever CSearch virtual conference would be overwhelming, but it ended up being very exciting! It is rewarding to see that the conference gathered hundreds of computer science students across the country!” – Maram Assi, Program Coordinator
While organizing CSearch virtually definitely brought some new challenges, I love how it turned out! I think the best part was being able to connect with students across Canada that we normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to talk to – there’s some really exciting research across our nation!” – Emily Kaczmarek, Logistics Coordinator
