Congratulations Gabor Fichtinger
Congratulations to Professor Gabor Fichtinger, Queen’s School of Computing CCO Research Chair, on his successful application to the Canada-Latin American and the Caribbean Research Exchange Grants program. Dr. Fichtinger will be working with Professor Alvaro Gómez of the Universidad de la República in Montevideo, Uruguay to develop a shared platform for radiation-free paediatric scoliosis monitoring. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Fichtinger’s Uruguayan collaborators to the School, and wish him safe travels in his research exchange collaboration.
COCA 201 Student Jonas Lobo receives Editor’s Choice at Maker Faire
Undergraduate student Jonas Lobo, who was enrolled in the Queen’s School of Computing course COCA 201 in Winter 2013, is the winner of the Editor’s Choice at Maker Faire. His giant actuated origami project received a good reception at the maker Faire winning three editor’s choice awards and is featured on the Make magazine blog , and was featured on the front page the Saturday of the Faire.

Roel Vertegaal in the News
Two news items appeared this week, featuring Roel Vertegaal and the work of the Human Media Lab.
Roel’s invention, the PaperTab, helped Plastic Logic of Cambridge, U.K., earn the title of Top Gadget Innovator of the Year by Business Weekly.
An interview with Roel appears in the Huffington Post about curved smartphone screens that may lead to fully flexible devices.
Nick Graham’s CP-Net Research Recognized with Further Funding from OBI
Congratulations to Queen’s School of Computing Professor Nick Graham and to CP-Net in their successful application to the Ontario Brain Institute for funding. Led by Dr. Darcy Fehlings of Holland Bloorview Hospital and the University of Toronto, CP-NET connects children with cerebral palsy and their families to a network of world-renowned researchers from across Ontario and across scientific disciplines to improve understanding and accelerate the development of new treatments for this disease. Over the next five years, Nick will contribute to the Technology Platform through his “Exergame Technology for Youth with CP” research.
We are very proud of Nick’s contribution to improving the lives of children with CP and wish him all the best.
Karolina Zurowska Wins ACM Student Research Competition at MODELS’13

Mohammad Zulkernine Wins Canada-Africa Research Exchange Grant
Congratulations to Queen’s School of Computing Professor, Mohammad Zulkernine, on his successful collaborative research application to the Canada-Africa Research Exchange Grants program. Dr. Zulkernine will be working with Dr. Ejigu of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia to develop “Secure and Trustworthy Reservation and Medical Records System (STRMRS),” along with collaborating hospitals in both nations.
We look forward to welcoming Dr. Zulkernine’s Ethiopian collaborators to the School and wish him safe travels in this research exchange program.
