Dr. Fichtinger Receives Mitacs Globalinks Funding

We at the School of Computing are happy to congratulate Dr. Gabor Fichtinger on recent funding from the Mitacs Globalink program in support of two international trainee internships:

  • Globalink project Real-time electromagnetic navigation of oral cancer resection supports a visiting trainee to Dr. Fichtinger’s lab from Hungary
  • Globalink project SlicerAR: software platform for augmented reality medical visualization supports a visiting trainee to Dr. Fichtinger’s lab from Spain

School of Computing Celebration of Excellence

Faculty, staff, students and special guests gathered in the Fireside Room at Ban Righ Hall on Friday to celebrate the recent achievements of faculty in the School. First, Drs James Cordy and Patrick Martin who are retiring after many years were recognized for their great service to the School for over 30 years. Second, Dr Gabor Fichtinger was recognized for being named Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Computer-Integrated Surgery. Third, Dr Ahmed Hassan was recognized for his NSERC Steacie Fellowship (for his contributions to the applications of machine learning to the engineering of ultra large-scale systems), his induction into the Royal Society of Canada, and his elevation to the rank of IEEE Fellow. Finally, Dr Robin Dawes was recognized for receiving the Frank Knox award for outstanding commitment to the education of students of Queen’s University through teaching excellence.

The School of Computing appreciates the participation of the following in the event:

Gabor Fichtinger Named Canada Research Chair in Integrated Surgery

Congratulations to Gabor Fichtinger on being named Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Computer Integrated Surgery.

Every year, the Government of Canada invests approximately $265 million through the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program to attract and retain some of the world’s foremost academic talent. On May 3, 2018, four Queen’s researchers were appointed to Tier 1 and Tier 2 CRC roles – two of whom have been newly selected and two who were renewed for another term.

“The Canada Research Chairs Program continues to nurture exciting research being conducted at institutions across the country,” says John Fisher, Interim Vice-Principal (Research). “Here at Queen’s we are very proud to have not only two of our current Chairs renewed to their roles, but to also have two faculty members appointed as brand new chair holders. Their leadership within their respective academic disciplines represents the research excellence our university strives to achieve.”

Tier 1 Chairs are recognized by their peers as world leaders in their respective fields, while Tier 2 Chairs are recognized as emerging leaders in their research areas. Queen’s will receive $200,000 per year over seven years for each Tier 1 Chair and $100,000 per year over five years for each Tier 2 Chair. Currently, Queen’s is home to over 40 Canada Research Chairs.

Developed in 2000, the CRC program promotes research excellence in engineering, natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

Hillary Lia Named Finalist for Computing Research Association’s (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award

Please join us in congratulating Hillary Lia who has been named as Finalist for the Computing Research Association’s (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award. Hillary is a third year undergraduate student in the Biomedical Computing Honour’s Program. She conducts research in the Perk Lab under the mentorship of Drs. Gabor Fichtinger and Tamas Ungi. Her research pertains to development of novel methods for computational surgical skill assessment and translation of those into training curricula in the Queen’s Clinical Simulation Centre. It is especially remarkable that Hillary earned this great honor as a third year undergraduate, the youngest among the nominees.

KHSC and Queen’s to become First in North America to Use iKnife

Every few years a new piece of technology is released that can dramatically change the way medical teams provide care to their patients. Now, Canadian surgeons and researchers have partnered with a team in the U.K. to develop a tool that will transform the way cancer is surgically removed in the future.

During surgery, medical teams balance the need to remove all of a tumour, while at the same time not removing too much healthy tissue. In the operating room this is often complicated by the fact that tumours do not have smooth edges.

“Often a patient will ask after surgery if we were able to remove all the cancer,” says Dr. John Rudan, head of the Department of Surgery at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and Queen’s University. “Sometimes it’s hard to tell if all the cancer has been removed until the tissue is tested in a lab. This can mean that patients may have to undergo a second surgery if some of the tumour was missed. We hope our new tool will one day help solve this problem.”

The tool, known as the NaviKnife, combines an “intelligent” surgical tool called the iKnife, developed at Imperial College in London, England, with real-time mapping capability developed at Queen’s. The iKnife, which heats and cauterizes tissue as it cuts, uses mass spectrometry to analyze the smoke that is produced from each cut and can ‘smell’ if the tissue was cancerous.

Perk Lab hosted a double visit by both Mayor Paterson and MPP Kiwala on August 10, 2017. The visit was a solid team effort and went spectacularly. The visit is even featured in the city’s semiannual news “Voice of the City”!

New Arts & Science Dean Barbara Crow Visits the School of Computing

On Wednesday, incoming dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science Barbara Crow, along with Associate Dean Nick Mosey, visited the School for a tour of the Perk, Medical Informatics, Human Media, and EQUIS labs.

“I appreciated the breadth of your areas of study and commitment to Computing,” Crow said. “I was very impressed with the Labs and how articulate the students were about their participation in research projects.”

Mayor Paterson and MPP Sophie Kiwala Visit the Perk and HML Labs

Congratulations to the Perk Lab and the Human Media Lab on a very successful and impressive show during Mayor Paterson’s visit last Thursday (Aug 10).

Double Congratulations to the Perk Lab for hosting the visit of MPP Sophie Kiwala on same day, where a COGECO film crew shot an episode for the TV series “Conversations with Sophie”; quoting Ms. Kiwala, “a show featuring some of Kingston’s most inspiring people.” The episode concentrates on NaviKnife, a collaborative project between the School of Computing’s Perk Lab and the Department of Surgery.

The mayor’s visit was also covered in the Gazette.

Dr. Gabor Fichtinger, and to Dr. C. J. Engel (Surgery) Receive CIHR Collaborative Health Research Projects Grant

Congratulations to Queen’s School of Computing Professor, Dr. Gabor Fichtinger, and to Dr. C. J. Engel (Surgery), as well as to their team of researchers, on their successful application to the CIHR Collaborative Health Research Projects (NSERC Partnered) for the project “Real-time Breast Cancer Surgery Navigation”.

The team will work towards eliminating positive margins in breast cancer surgery through biomedical computing research and development.
